I should stop forcing my values and ideologies on my children because all would be for NAUGHT.
Take Barbie for example, I made a promise that I would never get Una those silly dolls. Those dolls will never do anything good to a little girl’s self image. It will only instill in her the importance of being beautiful over other greater things such as intelligence, self-respect, love… and what have yous. Those dolls will only teach girls to be vain at such a young age. And don’t get me started on fairytales.
And then Una attended a birthday party and had her first taste of Barbie, (an imitation doll from China no less) which she snatched from the piƱata and then… she got hooked on Barbie. Yes, the same silly dolls that I have just ranted and raved about.
Last night I asked her what she wanted for Christmas.
” Toys, mama.”
“OK. What kind of toys? How about a big girl’s bed?” (this is so we can get her to move out of our bed)
“Yes, bed ug un-nan (pillows). Habow (habol - blanket pud).”
“Good girl!”
“Nya A-R-B-I-E sab.”
Aarrgh! She cannot pronounce YET most of the consonant in initial form - (B)ARBIE, (B)IRDY, (M)INDA.
This morning my officemate gave me something for Una: A foam soap from Barbie Fairytopia series. Am sure that my duhling will be up and about all night marveling at this new form of witchcraft.
